Polaris Pool Cleaner Overview
A brief overview of the Polaris Swimming Pool Cleaners.

Polaris Automatic Pool Cleaners are pressure side cleaners.  What that means is that these cleaners operate off of the pressure from your swimming pool.  In a nutshell, the pool has skimmer(s) and drain(s) that take water from the pool to the pump and filter.  The filtered water then returns back into the pool.  That water returning back into the pool is the pressure the cleaner uses to move throughout the pool to clean.

The cleaner has connection fittings and hose attachments that connect directly to the pool return and the cleaner itself.  The cleaner has jets located throughout the unit which uses the water pressure to drive the unit and create the suction to pick up the debris.

Polaris makes various different models.  They make models for in-ground pools (models 180, 280, 380, 480 and 360) and models for above-ground pools (65, Turbo Turtle).  The models that end in an 80 (180, 280, 380, and 480) are the models that run off a separate dedicated pressure line.  What this means is that these cleaners run off of a booster pump that has its own pressure line that the cleaner connects to.  This is beneficial as the cleaner is using its own dedicated line and not interrupting the normal pool filtration system.  The separate booster pump is a 3/4 HP pump that can run while your larger pool pump is off (which is a lot more energy efficient).  The models that do not end in an 80 run strictly off the pressure from the pool system.  The numbers in front of the 80 specifies the time line of these cleaners (1 being the oldest model up to a 4 which is the newest model).  These numbers also specify how many suction jets are located on the cleaner.  If the removable debris bag is removed, you will notice these suction jets down the throat of the cleaner.

Which Polaris cleaner to choose for your pool?

In my humble opinion, I would suggest the Polaris 65 or Turbo Turtle for above-ground pools and the Polaris 280 for in-ground pools.

The Polaris 65 and Turbo Turtle, which is essentially the 65 with the Turtle cover, are cleaners that run off the pressure from the pool and collect debris in its own bag.  The both have a simple connection to your return line and a bag that floats behind the cleaner to collect debris.

The Polaris 280 runs off the pressure from the pool from a dedicated line and booster pump.  The Polaris 280 has a larger throat that helps with collecting larger debris (leaves) and it uses a drive shaft rather than the drive belt that you would find on the Polaris 380.  The drive belts tend to break down while the drive shaft practically lasts the life of the cleaner.
